Amravati/Nagpur — A disturbing sexual abuse case emerging from Maharashtra’s Amravati district has sent shockwaves across the state, after police confirmed the circulation of more than 100 explicit videos allegedly involving minor girls. A 19-year-old suspect, identified as Ayan Ahmed Tanveer Ahmed, has been arrested and remanded to police custody until April 21 as authorities intensify a multi-layered investigation into the case.

A Scandal Unfolds Across Small Towns

The towns of Paratwada and Achalpur, located roughly 180 kilometers from Nagpur, have become the epicenter of the unfolding scandal. According to police sources, the accused allegedly targeted minor girls through social media platforms, luring them into relationships before subjecting them to sexual exploitation.

Authorities say that Ahmed not only assaulted the victims but also recorded the acts without their consent. These recordings were then reportedly used as tools of coercion and blackmail, with threats of making the videos public if victims resisted or attempted to cut ties.

The situation escalated dramatically when clips and videos—reportedly numbering over 100—began circulating across messaging apps and social media platforms. Investigators believe that the scale of distribution suggests a wider network or at least the involvement of additional individuals aiding in filming or dissemination.

Political Pressure and Swift Police Action

The case gained political attention after Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Anil Bonde and BJP state spokesperson Shivrai Kulkarni formally approached Amravati Rural Superintendent of Police Vishal Anand. They alleged systemic exploitation and warned of public agitation if immediate action was not taken.

Following the complaint, law enforcement moved quickly to detain the accused. Officials confirmed that Ahmed’s mobile phone and digital devices have been seized and are currently undergoing forensic examination.

“We are analyzing digital evidence and tracing the origin and spread of these videos,” SP Vishal Anand said. “We are also monitoring individuals who have downloaded or reshared such content. Strict action will be taken against those involved in circulation.”

Cyber Cell Steps In

The cyber crime unit has launched a parallel operation to contain the digital spread of the material. Authorities are working with social media platforms and internet service providers to identify and remove the videos.

However, officials acknowledge that once such content becomes viral, complete removal is challenging. “We are making every effort to minimize harm and prevent further dissemination,” a cyber cell officer stated.

Police have warned that sharing or possessing such content constitutes a serious criminal offense under Indian law, especially when it involves minors.

One of the most troubling aspects of the case is the absence of formal complaints from victims or their families. Police believe this reluctance stems from deep-rooted social stigma and fear of public shame.

Child rights activists have pointed out that such silence is common in cases involving sexual abuse and digital exploitation, particularly in smaller towns where societal pressures can be overwhelming.

“This case highlights the urgent need for awareness, victim support systems, and community-level interventions,” said a Nagpur-based child protection advocate. “The fear of social ostracization often prevents justice from being pursued.”

Investigators suspect that Ahmed may not have acted alone. Some of the videos appear to have been filmed from angles suggesting the presence of a second individual behind the camera.

“We are exploring all angles, including the possibility of accomplices who may have assisted in recording or distribution,” a senior police official said on condition of anonymity.

The gravity of the case has reached the highest levels of the state administration. Maharashtra Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule stated that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken note of the developments.

“This is a serious matter with multiple dimensions. A thorough investigation is underway, and strict action will be taken,” Bawankule said, indicating that more details may emerge as the probe deepens.

The incident has reignited debates around online safety, digital literacy, and the vulnerability of minors in the age of social media. Experts argue that while technology has expanded connectivity, it has also created new avenues for exploitation.

Legal experts suggest that the accused could face multiple charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the Information Technology Act.

“These offenses carry severe penalties, including long-term imprisonment,” said a Nagpur-based criminal lawyer. “If distribution of child sexual abuse material is proven, it significantly escalates the gravity of the case.”

Authorities are also examining whether charges can be extended to individuals who knowingly shared the videos, potentially widening the scope of prosecution.
