Durga Puja, one of India’s most revered festivals, commences on October 20th, marking a time of profound significance for devotees of the goddess Durga. Rooted in mythology, this festival commemorates the victory of the divine feminine over the malevolent demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Beyond its religious import, Durga Puja is a jubilant occasion characterized by vibrant festivities, cultural revelry, and communal gatherings.

Highlighting the global resonance of this age-old tradition, an African island nation has unveiled a distinctive postage stamp honoring Goddess Durga. Today, Sao Tome and Principe, a tropical archipelago nestled near the equator, issued a limited edition stamp commemorating this auspicious deity. Numismatist Alok Goyal, the sole proprietor entrusted with the distribution rights for this stamp, revealed its exquisite features and significance to collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the stamp boasts a luxurious velvet effect embellished with dazzling Swarovski elements. Its monetary value is denoted in 86,000 Dobra, the local currency unit of Sao Tome and Principe, equivalent to approximately Rs. 2600 in Indian currency. Adorning the stamp is a captivating portrayal of ‘Sherawali Maa,’ the resplendent form of Durga, depicted serenely seated atop a majestic tiger, symbolizing her fierce yet benevolent nature.

Goyal further elucidated that a mere 1500 pieces of this exclusive stamp have been issued worldwide, adding to its rarity and allure. Of these, 1000 have been designated for distribution within the Indian market, underscoring the cultural affinity and reverence for Goddess Durga within the country. The remaining stamps will be retained by Sao Tome and Principe, serving as a testament to the island nation’s recognition and appreciation of this revered deity.

The issuance of this commemorative stamp not only celebrates the timeless allure of Durga Puja but also underscores the festival’s global resonance and cultural significance. It serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact of Indian traditions and spirituality on a diverse array of cultures and societies across the globe. As collectors and enthusiasts eagerly await the opportunity to acquire this coveted stamp, it serves as a tangible symbol of reverence for Goddess Durga and the enduring legacy of Durga Puja.
