Shabana Azmi has ignited a new debate, asserting that songs like “Fevicol Se” are the major pollutants of Bollywood. Known for her candid opinions on social issues and the film industry, Azmi, on International Women’s Day, vocalized her concern about the negative societal impact of vulgar item numbers, specifically criticizing Kareena Kapoor’s performance in Dabangg 2.
Azmi stressed the importance of acknowledging the problem as the first step toward finding a solution. She expressed disappointment at the overtly explicit performances in Bollywood, highlighting worries about their influence on the younger generation. Azmi questioned the industry’s celebration of women’s sensuality when songs contain lines like “Main to tandoori murgi hun yaar, gatka le mujhe alcohol se.”
“I have reservations against item numbers. That’s because I think if a top most heroine is singing I am roasted chicken, swallow me down with alcohol, it’s not a laughing matter. It’s a serious issue. She said only one person wrote the song, a few more got it made but it was watched by millions of people. They also see their six year old kids singing and dancing on it. Don’t you have a responsibility? It’s not fun.”
On this matter, Azmi raised valid concerns about the potential impact of such songs on young minds, questioning the appropriateness of exposing them to such toxicity. She criticized the lyrics, emphasizing the seriousness of a top heroine singing about being a “roasted chicken” and getting consumed with alcohol. Azmi urged the industry to consider its responsibility, especially given the millions, including six-year-olds, who watch and emulate these performances.
